Butterfly House + Aquarium

Extension and internal conversion of an existing building.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

CB 3-2_edited.jpg

The Butterfly House and Aquarium stands as an extension to an existing structure in the heart of ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Covering an area of 330 square meters, this south-facing extension introduces a distinctive walk-through tropical garden, bathed in diffused natural light, and featuring a breathtaking showcase of butterflies, fish, and crocodiles.

The design of the extension comprises a series of gracefully curved glulam timber ribs, enveloped in PTFE/twin-skin polycarbonate. This innovative combination permits the infiltration of UV light into the internal spaces. The structure takes inspiration from the curve of a butterfly wing in section and the plan of a chrysalis.

Guiding visitors along an internal path, the building offers an immersive experience with a diverse array of species, including 30 different butterfly species and two African dwarf crocodiles housed in a specially designed crocodile pool. Throughout the space, strategically placed breakout areas encourage visitor engagement, complemented by Perspex viewing domes offering captivating glimpses into the crocodile exhibit.
